Sydvaranger aims to resume operations and deliver high-quality magnetite iron ore to the global market. Since 2024, the company has been owned by the Swedish company Grangex.
Sydvaranger’s employees and management have been working intensively to complete a feasibility study that will form the basis for the mine’s restart. In early September 2025, this study was finalized, and the results show that the mine has the potential for 25 years of operation based on the currently identified iron ore resources. We are now in a phase of completing final studies and preparing the facilities for production.
There is also a strong focus on creating long-term value for the local community, both through jobs, cooperation with local suppliers, and investments in infrastructure. The company therefore has a dual role: on one hand, to restart the mine and deliver competitive iron ore to the global market, and on the other, to develop a robust, future-oriented organization that safeguards nature, people, and the community of Sør-Varanger municipality.

Today, 30 employees work at Sydvaranger, divided between administration and maintenance.

Sydvaranger is in a project phase, with operations planned to start in 2026/2027

During the operational phase, Sydvaranger will produce iron ore with a 70% iron content and deliver up to 3,5 tonnes of iron ore concentrate a year to the global market.
